UNM HSC Malawi Book Drive

01/17/2017 to 04/07/2017
Albuquerque NM

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

The drive is a collaboration between faculty members from the UNM Health Sciences Library & Informatics Center and the UNM Arts-In-Medicine program.

For an introduction to the work of the Arts-in-Medicine program and Dr. Patrice Repar in Malawi, view this 10-minute video: https://youtu.be/0c-ZdVrpSZs

About our African Partners...

Donated books will be going to the Malawi College of Health Sciences in Blantyre, Malawi. The college serves over 700 students as well as health care professionals from the neighboring Queens Hospital. The college currently only has 800 books, most of which are outdated or in poor condition. This means that students and providers do not have access to current information, which diminishes health care quality in Malawi.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are primarily interested in books published within the last 5-10 years. PLEASE DO NOT DONATE OUTDATED MATERIALS!

We are specifically interested in books covering these subjects:
• Primary Care and Family Practice
• Nursing
• Midwifery
• Obstetrics & Gynecology
• Anatomy & Physiology
• Organ Systems
• Basic Sciences: Microbiology, Immunology, Biochemistry
• Emergency Medicine & Trauma
• Infectious Diseases & Parasitology, in particular, HIV, Tuberculosis, Malaria
• Pediatrics
• Pharmacology

The College does not have a need for in-depth materials in medical specialties. Please provide only basic or introductory materials in these subject areas:
• Oncology
• Radiology
• Surgery
• Ophthalmology
• Dentistry
• Dermatology
• Psychiatry and Mental Health

Please note that if material is donated that is out of scope, it will not be sent to Malawi.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Books can be dropped off in the donation bin in the lobby of the Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center. We are unable to provide receipts for donations. You can find directions to the library here: http://hslic.unm.edu/contact/index.htm.

If you are not able to bring your books to HSLIC or have a large donation, please contact Karen McElfresh (kmcelfresh@salud.unm.edu) or Laura Hall (ljhall@salud.unm.edu) to make special arrangements.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

If you would like to donate money to help with shipping costs, you can do so online through the non-profit community organization The Partnership for Arts-in-Medicine http://www.partnership-artsinmedicine.org/. Scroll down to the DONATE box and stipulate a special instruction to assign your donation to the Malawi Book Drive. If you have questions about donating money please contact Patrice Repar at repar@unm.edu or 505-379-3332.
