Books play a crucial role in a child’s development by nurturing imagination, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the world around them. Without access to books, children miss opportunities to explore their interests and develop essential skills. The African Library Project plays an important role in filling this literacy gap across Africa, and our team wanted to do our part to help address a global issue.

As newcomers to the program, our project supervisor walked us through each step, taking the time to explain not just the logistics, but also the purpose behind the project and why it matters.  She emphasized how our efforts could help expand access to much-needed educational resources for young learners. Hearing this made us even more eager to get started, and we were excited to do our part.

Our team set a goal to create two half libraries in Botswana and Uganda. Each member was tasked with collecting 100 books. Everyone rose to the challenge, and we were excited to see the large number of books we had gathered when we met at a team member’s home.

Once we had a clear understanding of the task, we split into smaller groups to organize the books. Our job was to sort the books into categories and pack around 100 books per box, including a mix of soft and hardcover books. While it may sound like a big task, strong teamwork helped us complete the project in just a few hours. We quickly realized that communication and organization were key to getting the job done, and by working together, we managed to streamline the entire process.

Through this project, we gained practical skills like communication, organization, and time management, and formed strong bonds with one another. Working alongside people who shared the same passion for helping others created a sense of camaraderie. By the end of the day, we had built new friendships. It was inspiring to see how we all came together to contribute to such an important cause.

Participating in the African Library Project was an incredible experience for everyone involved. We had the opportunity to volunteer for a meaningful cause that directly benefits children our age, and the sense of pride and achievement we felt afterward was unmatched. None of this would have been possible without the support and cooperation of each team member, and we all left with a deeper appreciation for teamwork and the importance of giving back. Following this success, we registered again for another book drive to Kenya.

We would highly recommend the African Library Project to anyone who wants to make a positive impact. It’s a fantastic way to learn new skills, meet like-minded people, and make a difference in the lives of young learners.
