Thanks to the amazing support of our literacy heroes, volunteers, board of directors and staff, our annual fundraiser Harambee! was a smashing success. Together we raised $109,000 in net profit to help increase literacy in our African partner countries by starting small libraries. We’re overjoyed by this achievement and we couldn’t have done it without your support.

We were also honored to have William Kamkwamba, author of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, feature as our guest speaker at this year’s Harambee event. William Kamkwamba has won numerous awards for his creative nonfiction book The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, which is a true account of how he saved his village from famine by building a wind turbine to power multiple electrical applications in his families how in Malwai – all from a library book. Compassion in Action
Every year at Harambee!, we honor those who have made exceptional contributions to African literacy and library development. This year, those Compassion in Action awardees are:
Divya Prakash
For the past six years, Divya has been volunteering with African Library Project and has sent 7 libraries. Divya has worked hard to develop her leadership skills and used ALP as her motivation. As a 12-year-old, despite Divya’s rattling nerves, she presented to her school, local store managers, teachers, and her principal to mobilize support for her ALP book drives. Since then she has served as ALP’s marketing intern and continues to impress us with her dedication and thoughtfulness. She recently started her first year at Occidental College.
Dick and Cathy Lampman
Cathy Lampman started by helping the African Library Project get small grants for HIV/AIDS books from her church. Following this, Cathy agreed to become a Container Manager and since then has been an integral part of making our work happen! Leading the operations team, Cathy has ensured ALP maintains the happiest & most effective operations team ever! Dick, Cathy’s husband, became her tech wingman and has extended his services to the entire organization. They have helped establish 14 libraries in 5 countries. They are truly irreplaceable members of the ALP community.

A Cup a Joey is a book blog ran by Joanna Livingston. On her blog, she describes herself as “a mother, a wife, a creative, a devoted dog mom, and, God willing, a future novelist.” Joanna is a huge advocate of African Library Project.
