How One Student Brought Music and Community Together for Literacy

When passion meets purpose, incredible things happen. That’s exactly what high school student and African Library Project (ALP) book drive organizer Ishan Gottman proved this summer when he organized a community concert and fundraiser that combined his love of music with his desire to give back in support of ALP.

Ishan has been involved with ALP for years, both participating in and organizing book drives. He knows firsthand the power that access to books can have on young learners across Africa. He set out to raise awareness about literacy in Sub-Saharan Africa while bringing his local community together through something he cares deeply about: music.

Music with a Mission

The event, held at Rancho Madera Community Park in Simi Valley, CA, was born from a simple but powerful idea: bring people together through music to make a difference.  “Songs for Shelves was born out of my desire to do good for the world using one of my passions: music,” Ishan shared. Not only did he bring in bands and secure the park venue, but he also spent weeks distributing flyers, engaging with local businesses, and driving around town to collect donated books from people who couldn’t attend the concert.

Creating Impact Together

Ishan wanted attendees to walk away with one big takeaway: anyone can help. You don’t have to organize a large event to make an impact—whether it’s donating books, spreading the word, or starting a library, every effort matters. He reminds us that while one person can’t change the entire world, one person can absolutely change someone else’s world.

His reflections highlight why ALP loves to see young people step up, speak out, and use their voices for good! By connecting music, service, and global citizenship, Ishan demonstrated the incredible impact youth can have when they channel their creativity and compassion into action.

Unlocking Potential Through Books

What motivates Ishan most is the belief in students’ untapped potential. “What if there’s a really bright kid that could one day help change the world by curing cancer, but they live in an underserved African community without access to books, so they can’t reach their potential?” he asked. To Ishan, providing access to books is about more than literacy; it’s about giving young people the chance to see their own possibilities and bring them to life.

A Community Effort

The night of the event, the community came together for an evening of live music, food, and giving back. Thanks to Ishan’s persistence and vision, the fundraiser not only supported ALP’s mission but also raised awareness locally about the importance of global literacy.

And, of course, none of it would have been possible without the generous support of the talented musicians who donated their time and talent. A special thanks goes to the Choi // Conway Quartet, Guyliner, and Fido! for performing free of charge—and an extra thank you to Fido! for providing all the sound equipment that made the night possible.
