ALP Community Message

Dear African Library Project Community,

As we look ahead to the coming year, we want to share how the African Library Project (ALP) continues to grow in service of its mission. ALP has been built through the dedication of volunteers, partners, educators, donors, and community members working together to expand access to books across Africa. That shared commitment remains central to our work.

Like any mission-driven organization with a long history, ALP must also take time to reflect, adapt, and strengthen the ways we work together so that we remain aligned with our purpose and values — now and into the future. As part of this ongoing work, ALP is thoughtfully refining its governance, operations, and partnership structures to ensure they reflect our guiding principles:

  • Partnership — centering collaboration, mutual respect, and shared leadership across communities and continents

  • Involvement — creating clear, meaningful ways for volunteers and partners to contribute with clarity and purpose

  • Sustainability — building systems and practices that allow ALP’s mission to continue with consistency, care, and integrity

In the months ahead, we will share updates as new structures and opportunities for collaboration are introduced, including ways to bring U.S.-based volunteers and Africa-based partners together in alignment with ALP’s values.

We recognize that change can raise questions and welcome thoughtful engagement grounded in respect and shared purpose.  At the same time, we remain committed to operating with integrity and in alignment with ALP’s mission, policies, and governance responsibilities.

Above all, we are grateful to the many people who continue to show up with generosity and care. Together, we remain focused on what has always mattered most: standing in partnership to ensure that a childhood without books does not exist.
